In Fall 2024, the California State Railroad Museum and Lemelson-MIT Program launched a brand new online interactive course for high school innovators, financially supported by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation. Over 150 students applied from across the country (and around the world) to explore the future of railroading.
Students explored topics such as advancements in diesel-electric locomotives, high-speed rail electrification, the layout of the U.S. railway system, and the potential of alternative fuels. They learned through presentations and conversations with experts from across the railroad industry.
Over the course of the six-week program, students collaborated in teams to conduct research and develop innovative solutions to real-world issues facing the current and future rail industry. These student-designed posters showcase their innovated solutions, problem-solving skills, and forward-thinking ideas.
