SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are gearing
up to celebrate “Diesels and Dads” on Father’s Day weekend – June 20 & 21, 2015 -- by operating two
visually-exciting and gracefully-styled diesel locomotives as part of the popular weekend excursion train
rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad. Departing hourly from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the brightly painted
diesels -- Western Pacific No. 913 and Southern Pacific “Daylight” No. 6051 -- will pull the excursion
trains both Saturday and Sunday on Father’s Day weekend. The eye-catching and classic streamlined
locomotives are representative of the so-called “First Generation” of diesel-electric locomotives which
replaced steam engines all across America during the 1940s and 1950s.
Additionally, the California State Railroad Museum recently introduced first-class service for guests who
choose a VIP experience aboard an air-conditioned vintage lounge car. The new service includes
uniformed stewards in white jackets providing beverage and food services to guests in the manner and
style of the “glory days” of railroading. This new first-class service takes place in an actual Southern
Pacific observation/lounge car built in 1922 with leather seats and wood paneled walls, or a Southern
Pacific lounge car from 1950 that served on its famed “Sunset Limited’ service.
Excursion train ride tickets are available to book online in advance or can be purchased in-person starting
at 10:30 a.m. the day of the train ride (based on availability) at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket
