The California State Railroad Museum established the Collis P. Huntington Legacy Society for individuals who have made estate plans to name the CSRM Foundation in their will, trust or other estate planning vehicle. Membership is automatic once the Foundation has been notified of the donors commitment to support the Foundation in their estate plans. We look forward to getting to know Society members through special events, visits, newsletters and more. We are grateful to these generous donors who help to maintain a strong and vibrant Museum by leaving a legacy for future generations.
Donors contemplating future estate gifts are encouraged to contact Development Director Jay Cohen at [email protected] or (916) 407-2213 for additional information.

Donate Your Collection
The California State Railroad Museum welcomes donations. The Museum’s Collections are primarily the result of the gifts of many individual and corporate donors. The Museum makes additions to the collections primarily by donation and more than 95 percent of the present collection is the result of gifts from more than 2,000 donors since the Museum’s inception in 1976. Each year families, collectors, and companies select the California State Railroad Museum as the permanent repository for their railroad photographs, books, manuscripts, and artifacts. The Museum Library has a distinguished record for acquiring, organizing, preserving and making available collections of photographic and documentary materials. Learn more.
When a proposed gift contains considerable duplicate or out-of-field materials, Museum Staff may suggest that the item(s) be donated to the California State Railroad Museum Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization charted to assist the Museum as a California State Parks Cooperating Association. The Foundation exists to support the exhibits and programs of the Museum.
The mission of the California State Railroad Museum Foundation is to generate revenue and awareness on behalf of its destinations, while supporting the preservation, interpretation and promotion of our railroad heritage. Contributions to the Museum Foundation are also deductible for federal and state income tax purposes. The Foundation has its own Deed of Gift form. The Foundation Deed of Gift specifically advises donors that they are making “an unrestricted, unconditional gift to the California State Railroad Museum Foundation, Inc., to be retained, used, or disposed of in any manner and for any purpose deemed appropriate, including, but not limited to, being traded or sold.”
The Museum Foundation does not independently collect. Donated surplus and out-of-field materials are discretely placed or exchanged with recognized dealers to the benefit of the Museum’s permanent collections.
