What: A number of historic rail equipment moves will take place on the California State Railroad Museum’s turntable and inside the Roundhouse on Thursday, September 15, to welcome the historically significant Central Pacific Commissioner’s Car that will be on display inside the Museum for a limited time. On loan from the Nevada State Railroad Museum, the Commissioner’s Car carried Gov. Leland Stanford and ceremonial spikes to Promontory for the joining of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 and is the only surviving rolling stock from that historic event.
The California State Railroad Museum received the Commissioner’s Car as part of a temporary “swap” with the Nevada State Railroad Museum. In June of this year, the California State Railroad Museum sent the Virginia & Truckee No. 21 J. W. Bowker and the Virginia & Truckee No. 12 Genoa to Carson City for their 150th anniversary celebration of the completion of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad to highlight the West’s tremendous railroad heritage and have as many of the original locomotives reunited as possible.
